In fan-related ‘say it ain’t so’ news, BBC Worldwide has confirmed that the Doctor Who Experience will be closing in Cardiff next summer. According to WalesOnline, the Experience (which opened in 2012) will be ending their five year lease from the City of Cardiff Council. Refurbished in 2014 for Peter Capaldi’s take on the 12th Doctor, the exhibition houses one of the largest collection of props, sets, and costumes from the television show.
I should know – I was lucky enough to visit it in 2014 when I was in London for a two month internship. I attended on one of the last weekends before that refurbishment, and you can see photos from my tour below (head’s up – there are a lot of photos). I’ve been wanting to write up my experiences for a while, but real life got in the way. As you can see from the photos, it has items from both the new series as well as the classic, and even has the TARDIS console from the An Adventure in Space and Time movie that Mark Gatiss wrote for the 50th anniversary of the show.
The article above mentions that BBC Worldwide is unsure about having the exhibit open elsewhere, and there is already a petition online to save the exhibit. However, it does indicate that this was a mutually-agreed upon closing between BBC Worldwide and the City Council.
