G33K Out: Gallifrey One 2018
If you know me at all, you know I’ve been a fan of Doctor Who for most of my life. I’ve written about it extensively, whether it’s my “Love Letter to Doctor Who“ for the 50th anniversary, or my editorial on how my feelings changed over the years titled “Looking at ‘Doctor Who’ Series 9: Breaking Up is Hard to Do”.
So, when I had the chance at a ticket for this year’s Gallifrey One, I jumped at the chance.
Gallifrey One is the world’s largest and longest-running annual Doctor Who fan convention, with this being its 29th year. I actually had only started hearing about it back in 2013, when Travis Richey mentioned it in my very first G33K Out podcast. However, this was the first year I had been able to afford tickets, thankfully in part to their ticket transfer options back in March.
Here are my thoughts for my first time attending.
Basic show notes:
- Running time is 47 minutes, 13 seconds.
- The 2018 Gallifrey One was February 15 — 18. My initial recording was done April 19, although some of the segments were recorded on April 29.
- Gallifrey One has their official wrap up here, and more information about the con overall can be found there as well.
- The Doctor Who theme is the end title theme as composed by Ron Grainer, and used during Sylvester McCoy’s term as the Doctor.
- During my breakdown, here are some of the things I mentioned:
- I mentioned the Louis CIA fan club.
- I attended the panel for Doctor Puppet, which you can find on YouTube and Tumblr.
- I attended the Timey Wimey Puppet Show, which also has a YouTube channel. I mention the person running it is with the Paul Mesner Puppets in Kansas City.
- I attended interviews with Rachel Talalay, who is on Twitter and Tumblr, and Jemma Redgrave.
- I attended the panel for the Radiophonic Workshop: you can get more information on this from their Facebook page, BBC Music, and this article from when they turned 50. I also mentioned their band.
- I attended a panel about the Big Finish Audio.
- I talked about the Whovian Feminism blog, and mention her write up of the “Gallifrey Waits No More”
- I have a (sort of) plug from Chase Masterson, and the charity auction for the Pop Culture Hero Coalition.
- I reference my review of The Good Place for F-BOM.
- In this episode, “Angie Geeks Out” about the Onion’s podcast A Very Fatal Murder.
- Theme music is “Schoolyard Haze”, by JariPitkanen, available via the Free Music Archive.
- This podcast is released under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share-Alike License.
